What is the Book of Mormon?

Find out more about the joy that the Gospel of Jesus Christ can bring to your life.

The Book of Mormon, like the Bible, is Scripture. It contains the records of ancient prophets on the American continent. It is another testimony to Jesus Christ. It testifies of His divinity, His mission, and the prophecies of His Atonement, death and Resurrection for mankind. The most important event described in the Book of Mormon is the appearance of Jesus Christ to the people in America, the Nephites, after His Ascension.

It teaches about His gospel, the Plan of Salvation that God has prepared for us, and how we can experience happiness both here on earth and for all eternity.

The angel Moroni guided the Prophet Joseph Smith to the hidden golden plates, where Book of Mormon orginated. He translated them by the power and gift of God. As a result, today we have another book of Scripture that testifies to all people about our living Saviour, Jesus Chris.

Towards the end of this Book, the prophet Moroni testifies that anyone can find the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. Whoever reads it and prays to God asking about its truthfulness with a sincere heart, true intention and having faith in Christ-will receive his or her answer by the Holy Spirit.

"...my words shall hiss forth unto the ends of the earth, for a standard unto my people..."

2 Nephi 29:2

  • Jesus Christ
"And [Jesus] shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities." [Alma 7:11-12, The Book of Mormon]
  • The Purpose of Life
"For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed." [Alma 34:32-33, The Book of Mormon]
  • Life After Death
"And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow. The soul shall be restored to the body, and the body to the soul; yea, and every limb and joint shall be restored to its body; yea, even a hair of the head shall not be lost; but all things shall be restored to their proper and perfect frame. And then shall the righteous shine forth in the kingdom of God." [Alma 40:12, 23, 25, The Book of Mormon]
  • Love
"And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." [Mosiah 2:17, The Book of Mormon]
  • Baptism
I teraz, jeśli Baranek Boży, będąc święty, musi zostać ochrzczony w wodzie, aby wypełnić wszelką prawość, jak znacznie większą potrzebę mamy my, będąc nieświęci, abyśmy zostali ochrzczeni, zaiste, w wodzie! I teraz pytam was, moi umiłowani bracia, w jaki sposób Baranek Boży wypełnia wszelką prawość, będąc ochrzczony w wodzie? [2 Nephi 31: 5-7, The Book of Mormon]
  • The Fall of Adam and Eve
"And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had no end. And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin. But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things. Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." [2 Nephi 2:22-25, The Book of Mormon]

Authors of the Book of Mormon

"The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel.

The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. The record gives an account of two great civilizations." [Introduction, Book of Mormon]

The Book of Mormon was recorded on golden plates by ancient prophets in the Americas. The records dated from about 3100 BC to 421 AD.

Here are some of the prophets who wrote these records:
