The Plan of Salvation
"For this is My work and My glory - to bring immortality and eternal life to man."
Moses 1:39
The Plan of Salvation teaches us where we came from, why we are here and where we are going. God loves us, and His greatest desire is for us to return to His presence again. He created a perfect plan to make this possible.
This plan began before our life on earth. In our pre-earth life we lived with our Father in Heaven, learned about His plan for us and made the decision to follow it. We knew that we would come to earth to receive physical bodies and prepare to meet God again.
Under the direction of God, Jesus Christ created the earth. God sent Adam and Eve, His first children, to inhabit the earth. In the garden of Eden, they ate the forbidden fruit, which resulted in their being driven out of God's presence. This was a necessary step in God's plan to allow humans to be born on earth. It also allowed each person to exercise his or her own agency, that is, the ability to choose between good and evil.
Since "no unclean thing can inherit the kingdom of God" and each one of us sins, we need a Savior, Redeemer and Advocate. God sent Jesus Christ to earth to be our Savior, which was His main expression of love for us. Through Jesus Christ, God can both forgive, cleanse, and perfect us.
After our mortal journey is over, our souls are separated from our bodies and we live as spirits in what is known as the spirit world. In this place, the gospel is taught and we can continue to grow and make spiritual progress until we are resurrected. Those who never had the opportunity to learn about Jesus Christ will have the opportunity to learn of Him in this place and benefit from His Atonement.
After our time in the Spirit World we will be resurrected, which is made possible by the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Resurrection is the reuniting of our spirit and body. Each of us will be given an immortal and perfect body in which disease and illness will be no more. When we are resurrected, we will meet Jesus Christ and our Father in Heaven face to face. Our Saviour will judge us on the basis of our faith, deeds and repentance. With few exceptions, every child of God will be assigned to a particular kingdom of glory. If we are faithful, we will return to the presence of God.
